Act 2 Scenes 1-2
Posted by msjjohnson on April 20, 2008
I don’t know if anyone realizes this, but I am thrilled that the majority of our class is being actively involved in this assignment. We did an outstanding job at articulating our own thoughts this week as well as commenting on others posts. Thanks, that makes this more interesting to read. Ok, we will begin reading Act 2 this week. We need to hurry up and finish this play because we do have other novels to read. So, with that said, here are a few questions to answer- Yes, Leecia, extra credit will be given if you write on more than just one.
1. Explain how imagery and figures of speech make Scene 2 one of the most beautiful scenes in the play. Describe the imagery and figures of speech and illustrate how they are used.
2. Explain the purpose of Scenes 1 and 2.
3. Discuss Juliet’s concerns in the balcony scene.
Justin Loper said
In Act 2 Scene 1 Romeo and Juliet have a romantic dialouge scene in which Romeo stands under Juliets balcony in a Capulet orchard. With Juliet being a Capulet, and Romeo being a Montague, Juliet is concerned that if Romeo is caught talking her he will probably murdered. She suggests that Romeo hurry up and leave, but he refuses to leave, claiming that Juliet’s love would make him immune to his enemies. Juliet is also concerned that Romeo might not live up to what he says. She thinks that he might be lying to her about his love. 100 words eaxctly

Yes, thats a great point Justin; she is resevered about Romeo’s feelings for her. It has been less then 24 hours and he is “madly” in love with her. I don’t blame her, I would be hesitate as well.
Frederick Simpson *Mr. Superstar* said
I agree with you Ms. Johnson, I would hesitate too… When you madly love someone, you don’t always think of the consequences behind the relationship because you’re so in love with them that you’re willing to do anything to be with that person when your soul is anchored. Juliet for a prime example, was so anxious for Romeo to arrive at the Capulet’s Garden she started talking to herself because she didn’t know what would happen to him if he got caught. She used the air as if it was Romeo because she had some things she had to get off her chest. I also thought Juliet was kind of nervous, because she waited and waited for him and then started to get a bit worried. ‘Tis but thy name that is my enemy. Thou not thyself, thought not a Montague. What’s Montague? It is no hand, nor foot, nor arm, nor face, no any other part belonging to a man. O, be some other name! (71) This text support, gives you an image of her being nervous and worried. She just wants to get to the point and tell Romeo what’s on her mind.

Imagery and figures of speech make scene 2 one of the most beautiful scenes in the play because it is very descriptive.
Romeo:
“O, speak again, bright angel, for thou art
As glorious to this night, being o’er my head,
As is a winged messenger of heaven
Unto the white-upturned wond’ring eyes
Of mortals that fall back to gaze on him
When he bestrides the lazy puffing clouds
And sails upon the bosom of the air.”
Juliet:
“O Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou Romeo?
Deny thy father and refuse thy name,
Or, if thou wilt not, be but sworn my love,
And I’ll no longer be a Capulet.”
(Shakespeare, Act.2, Sc. 2, pg. 71)
Romeo is telling Juliet how beautiful she is to him. Meanwhile, Juliet is telling Romeo that she is willing to not be a Capulet in order for them to be together. She is starting to realize that she wants to marry him and become a Montague.
Overall, act 2 was a very romantic part of the play as Romeo and Juliet express their love for one another.

Juliet’s concern on the balcony scene was Romeo and him not being cauught in the Capulet’s Garden. She was worried about a lot of things. She was waiting to express her love for him and then started to get a little impatient because she did not see him show up. A lot was running through Juliet’s mind: family, marriage, and of course, her dear love Romeo. Like Justin responded, “Juliet is also concerned that Romeo might not live up to what he says. She may think that he’s lying to her about his love.” So basically, Juliet is concerned about many things. It was also a time for her to relax and get things off her chest.

In scene 2 of Romeo an Juliet this is the most romantic scene because Romeo is telling Juliet how he feels about her. They both are in agreement that even though they are enemies they they can still love each other an not be in fear of their families. Romeo also tells Juliet how beautiful he thinks she is an states that she is his sunlight. When Romeo states this it is said as if Juliet is sunlight an that it is sunlight an she is transforming night in to day but it is a metaphor. In the same speech they both are in question, they both are wishing that they were not the daughter of a Capulet or son of a Montague. Juliets says:”Tis but thy name that is my enemy.
Thou art thyself, though not a Montague.
What’s Montague? It is nor hand, nor foot,
Nor arm, nor face, nor any other part
Belonging to a man. O, be some other name!
What’s in a name? That which we call a rose
By any other word would smell as sweet.”
She questions why Romeo must be her enemy.Their love is so strong yet it has to be hidden from society.

In scene 1 and 2 the two Romeo and Julliet were talking, but not to each other doe. When Julliet was standing on her balcony she was thinking aloud. So everything that came to her mind was spoking out. Romeo was there so he heard about it. She spoke about Romeo and Romeo sneak to see her not even concern about the guards catching him. The place was surrounded and Romeo stayed there all night, and they talked about getting married.

In Act 2 Scene 1 Romeo and Juliet both was talking to themself about the love that they both have for each other not knowing that Romeo was below Juliet at the balcony. This is the romantic scene because they both are trying to tell one another that they love each other that much that the should get marry, which they do not telling anyone about their marriage. I agree with both Justin and Frederick when “Juliet say is also concerned that Romeo might not live up to what he says. When two people love each other as much as they say, they will take that risk of getin married not careing what they family say. That is what you call true love.
Derrick Newman said
The purpose of Scenes 1 and 2 of Act 2 is to show how much Romeo will risk in order to be with Juliet and show how much they both care for another. In Scene 1, Romeo had left Benvolio and Mercutio to go see Juliet. Not bothering to tell them where he was going, he worried them and risked their friendship. He also took a risk in entering the Capulet’s orchard, knowing that if he got caught by a Capulet, he would harmed or even killed. In Scene 2, Romeo and Juliet showed how much they cared about each other by expressing their feelings and asking for each others hand in marriage.

The scene where Juliet was on the balcony was about her expressing her feelings that she was truly in love with Romeo. “O Romeo,O Romeo, wherefore srt thou Romeo? Deny thy father and refuse thy name,Or,if thou wilt not,be but sworn my love, And no longer be a Capulet.” Reading that meant to me that she thought when she first met Romeo that she was truly in love.”Tis but thy name that is my enemy. Thou art thyself, though not a Montague.” That also proved that she didn’t care that she was hated from his family or he would be hated from her family just as long as they had true love.

The purposes of scences 1 and 2 is so that Romeo can really get to know Juliet, maybe to find out if she’s his true love or just his lust for that moment. In scence 1 Romeo left the feast and realizes that he cannot come home so, he went on a search to find Juliet and there he finds her standing in a window above where he is standing. Romeo then begans to tell her how beautiful she is and comparing her to the morning sun. She is amazed at Romeo, but then again, she is also worried that he is a Montague. He really took a risk coming and seeing Juliet, knowing that their are guards all around the garden and he can be murdered. Knowing Romeo, he feelings for Juliet were to strong that he was willing to do anything to see his true love, and so he did.So the purposes of scence 1 and 2 were Romeo and Juliet getting to know each other better, falling madly in love, and get married. Those were the purposes of scence 1 and 2.

Scene 2 is so beautiful to me because of how they were expressing how they truly felt about each other. It wasn’t like no normal “I Love You baby, I want to spend the rest of my life with you, your the only one for me” type stuff. They were bringing this stuff from the bottom of their hearts. “It is the East, and Juliet is the sun” that is very deep. Now this is so beautiful because stuff that deep is just goregous. The purpose for scene’s 1 and 2 is so you can get a closer look into how Romeo and Juliet feel about each other. Those 2 scenes were nothing but “I Love You, Let’s be together forever” type stuff. In the balcony scene Juliet was concerned about the fact that Romeo was a Montague and she was a Capulet. Their families were having a big feud at the time so she knew that people would not accept their love for one another. But most of all her father would not agree with it, therefore concerning her

In scene two it was a very romantic scene. This is when romeo and juliet fallin in in love and finds out that they cant live without each other. this is one of the most beautiful scenes because of all of the metaphores and similes they use to compare each other with.
“it is the east and juliet is the sun
Arise, fair sun,and kill the envious moon”, Romeo
romeo is really in love with juliet and juliet is really in love with romeo to but she is only concerned about the fact that she is a capulet and romeo is a montague.Iloved that scene though it just shows you how true love is suppose to be like and how love at first sight can possibly be there for some people.
juliets concern—
“Deny thy father and refuse thy name,
or if thou wilt not be but sworn my love,
and i’ll no longer be a Capulet.
her concern was that they were from two different families and they didnt like each other. she wontede her and romeo to be together and stuff so she was hopin that if they get married that the beef would stop..

Im responding to #3: First off, Juliet is not speaking to Romeo. She doesn’t even know that Romeo is under her window. Just as a poet might start a poem with “O, Moon”,or something like that. Shakespeare is actually playing a joke on Juliet. When she comes onto her balcony to think about the boy that she “loves”, and imagines talking to him, Shakespeare has “hidden” the boy underneath the balcony to overhear her. Romeo speaks words, with all the traditional devices of love poetry, and Juliet makes a poetic speech to her “absent” lover, just as romantic couples are supposed to, but both are faced in this scene with the tricky question of what to do when the subject of your “hidden or absent love” really talks back to you.
